First taste of these Kiwi folk... folks was from a random YouTube journey of their live New York show. I'm glad I stumbled upon them then, as almost directly preceding my discovery, there was a conspicuous flood of love for Flight of the Conchords from everywhere. Now I can say that I knew them before they were cool.
HBO smacked them up for a TV series based in New York. They tied their songs into the show, based around innocuous observations or ridiculous situations.
They released their self titled LP this year, but I hate digipaks so I haven't really thought about buying it. It features a whole bunch of my favourite songs from the show, so it's like deja vu listening to a new CD that I already have heard somewhere before. Odd sensation.
Favourites are "Bowie" because it's so true it makes me laugh, "Inner City Pressure" because of the unusual rhyming patterns and my favourite line 'the manager Bevan, starts to abuse me. Hey man I just want some museli'. "Foux du Fafa" because it is borderline racism, "Robots" because of the ridiculousness of the context juxtaposed with the emotionlessness of the voices and "Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros" just because.
Overall it's a riot. Love it.
